Well written, interesting to read. Even though the author has only been riding a short time she has added to the collective experience. I would anything by this author. Her writing reminds me of Jessica Hahn. Sign this book and pass it on!
I felt the author glorified a subersive lifestyle
This is a thought-provoking description from the inside of a sub-culture most of us would avoid joining at all costs. What surprised me most was the "easy come, easy go" attitude toward basics like blankets, clothing, and other necessities. Although the author begs us repeatedly to help out "dirty kids," I am less likely to hand out blankets, knowing they will probably end up rotting in a forest somewhere. Still, I am grateful to this book for inside information about the homeless problem. I hope that it persuades some young person experiencing hard times that abandoning possessions and hitting the road is not the answer. While I think most Americans, including myself, own way too much stuff, this book has convinced me that I really wouldn't want to own just the contents of a backpack and the clothes on my back.

My father once told me “Don’t be so hard on the homeless and hobo’s because you can easily be in their position; don’t change or take a shower for a week and you’ll be just like they are.” How to be a Hobo by Brooke Willett is a necessary book in the Disaster Response/Survival genre. Ms. Willett wrote this book after having a crisis in her life, her response was to give up everything and go on the road with her beloved dog Cloud.
Over the year or so she was in this situation, she wrote about how to get by on the streets and in many ways thrive. She briefly discusses most aspects of how to survive from dumpster diving, to where to sleep safely. The realization for the reader is that you truly don’t need much. She ends the book with how to get off the streets. This book does not romanticize this lifestyle, but successfully gives a first person point of view of people in this situation.
I think a lot of folks have gone through a rough period in their life when we realize things aren’t as we were told. Most of us will never do something as extreme as Brooke, but it was her way of dealing with it. One paragraph I believe sums up what she learned from being on the road perfectly
“Life is a journey. Don’t forget to stop and enjoy it once in a while, don’t get so caught up in life’s pleasures that you destroy what is truly important here. What is truly important? Creating the life you want to live. A life of fulfillment, happiness and purpose. Be your own author.”
An amazing story of an upper class young woman who had everything, decided that kind of life was not for her and ventures off across country with nothing but a few items in a backpack and her dog. A different view of life most of us know nothing about. The struggles and challenges of daily life when you have nothing but knowledge and a few survival skills. The hardships endured with no money, no vehicle and basically life on the streets. A must read.
I almost stopped reading in the beginning, when the author's disdain for anyone not defined by her as a "hobo" was made abundantly clear. I kept going, and then had to put the book down for a while when I read this passage in the section on hobo dating
" And if none of these lines work… there’s always the rape option. Consider it aggressive cuddling, and disappear to the next town when you are done. Besides, with a name like Snoopy, no one will find you anyway, and plus, you could always change your name to Patches or Pockets, which is hobo for Chris, John, Mike or Matt. Get her drunk first, and she’ll never notice. Hey, she might even like it. If she tries to call you out, she will describe you as that dirty dread head kid with the black shirt, back pack, and pit bull, and you’ve successfully blended in to every other traveler out there. As a bonus, if she goes to the cops, they will grill her about why she was sleeping in a ditch."
I finished the book, but honestly it spent most of its length telling us how great it is to manifest everything you need with your mind, while simultaneously referencing some pretty awful situations, then going back to waxing poetic about meditating what you need into being, and then finished by telling us how much better life is in a house.
I don't recommend this. It had very few typos or grammatical errors, which is why I have it two stars instead of one; it is at least fairly well written, but it was an offputting read for me.
funny and good advice! a good survey of a variety of hobo's experiences mixed with her own. an actually valuable tool for people consciously choosing the free life
