Instead of peace and safety, Miranda discovers the flat agricultural plains and salt marshes are rife with tales of mysterious fires, gutted animals, and strange sights and sounds in the night. Her new charge is a disturbed nine-year-old known as the Demon Child. In addition, rumors supported by the local curate claim that her employer, a badly scarred veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, is a demon. The Demons of Fenley Marsh edition by Blair Bancroft Romance eBooks Reviews

Always enjoy her books
Good gothic without any occult content, a Victoria Holt type story. Wish there were more.
The gorgeous cover of this book outstripped the content of this traditional historic Gothic romance. The setup is quintessential English salt marshes, isolated manor house, brave governess, tormented and physically damaged hero, superstitious villagers, etc. The novel departed in that Miranda Tyrell is a widow with a child brought to the edge of the world to care for a "demon" child.

Unfortunately, I had the culprit figured out about a third of the way into the book. The misdirection, at least for me, didn't work in the narrative. In the best Gothic suspense novels, the reader should never suspect the villain. That was not the approach here, where everyone is a suspect. We hear about this laboriously in Miranda's head. The mental wringing of her hands became tiresome in tone and repetition.

The romance between Miranda Tyrell and Jason Lunsford was odd. Jason didn't have enough menace to be a true anti-hero, so if he wasn't going to be cast that way, I wanted him to be a romantic hero. He wasn't really that either. He was just sort of.....distant. Intimacy and quiet trust moments were almost non-existent between the couple.

This being a suspense novel, I felt compelled to complete it, and Ms. Bancroft does have a way with describing a scene. The marsh roads, the buggy contraption, the murders, the rats - I could see them all with ease. That said, I was halted in my tracks several times from the exceedingly poor punctuation. I had a hard time fathoming this from an author with more than 30 books to her credit. 2.5 stars.
I have read quite a few of this author's work. I am never disappointed. I like the historical novels better than the modern novels but that is because i prefer that format. There is little explicit sex but sexual content is still there.Especially when it has to do with the mystery or plot of the book.I will read more of this author's work for sure.
The story is entertaining and moves along well enough to hold one's interest. It's not bad at all for a gothic novel written by a contemporary author.
I really like this author. Her books have everything I love. This one was one of my absolute favorites. I really liked Miranda.
A very enjoyable story. It is a Regency Gothic so there is some violence and people being murdered. A woman flees her home and goes to be a governess with her small son. As the woman at the employment bureau says; a widow can have a child, a governess can't. However a place is found where the governess is needed for a boy about the age of her son. All the tropes of a gothic are present but often in an altered form.
The heroine is human and amazing.
A very enjoyable story worth reading and rereading.
