In this “spell-binding romance” (Publisher’s Weekly), falsely accused, Irish-born convict Dominic Gallagher is shipped to the Australian Outback, where he is rescued from being beaten to death by Sarah Markham, the plain, no-nonsense, spinster daughter of a sheep baron. Indentured to Sarah’s father, gorgeous, blue-eyed Dominic must do “Miss Sarah’s” bidding even while the two begin to secretly burn with passion for each other. In an epic clash of wills, neither is prepared to give an inch. Then Dominic escapes, taking Sarah with him on a run for his life through the dangers of the Australian outback, and that clash of wills escalates into an explosion of heat as “Miss Sarah” and the dangerous, desperate convict find themselves falling in lust—and love.

About the Author
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved to write. My first book was a ten-page effort written at age five for my grandmother. Throughout grade school, high school and college I wrote for various school publications. When I was eighteen, my first professionally published piece—a humorous anecdote—appeared in Reader’s Digest. Still, it never occurred to me that I might become a professional writer. I aimed for a career as a lawyer and was actually in law school when I sold my first book. When that happened, the world lost a would-be lawyer and gained a writer. That book, which is still in print, is Island Flame, and it was published when I was twenty-four. Since then, I’ve written over forty books, which regularly appear on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publisher’s Weekly bestseller lists, among others. The mother of three sons, I read, I write, and I chauffeur children. That’s my life.

Set in Australia in the mid 19th century, this is the story of Sarah Markham whose father is a sheep rancher, and Dominic Gallagher, a Irish convict who was transported to Australia for a crime he didn’t commit and was then “purchased” by Sarah’s father to serve out his 15-year sentence. Because he is a man who speaks up when events call for it, he is whipped and abused. Sarah intervenes to save his life. The handsome Irish rogue knows Sarah is attracted to him, as most women are. But the odd thing to him is that he is attracted to her—a tall, skinny and plain woman. Robards, as usual, serves up delicious tension and some exciting action as life in New South Wales on the sheep station presents many dangers: convict uprisings, fires, rustlers and draught. Meanwhile, Sarah’s father is trying to get her to wed his ranch manager who has a cruel, evil side.
I loved the picture of the brooding sexy Irish hero—an alpha male to be sure—thrust into the dusty Australian frontier where life is even harder than what he left behind in Ireland where he longs to return. Both Sarah, who is biased against convicts, and Dominic, who has suffered wrong at the hands of his mother and now Sarah’s father, have trust issues they must overcome. And Dominic has connections to an English earl…
Robards’ portrayal of Australia is vivid (had me reaching for a glass of water!) and her characters very well drawn. A worthy read combining a favorite hero origin and a fascinating time in history.

Dark Torment edition by Karen Robards Romance eBooks Reviews
This may not be one of the best romance novels out there however it was the very first romance novel I read as a teen (that I snuck off my moms shelf). For years I have casually looked for it, not remembering the title and thanks to google synopsis of the book I found it. I reread it for old times sake and enjoyed it just as much as the first time.
I debated on the rating for this story and finally settled with I 'liked' it, even though I still had some ambivalence in my feelings over the story.
I liked the style of writing. Strong scene descriptions, just enough back story, unusual era and setting. Sara was a strong character and very well balanced with good/bad characteristics in her personality. Dominic was definitely likeable and loyal, almost to his detriment. This author has a great flare for character interactions. Sarah and Dominic's conversations and clashes were breath taking, funny and entertaining causing me to want to keep reading to see how they resolved their many issues.
There were a couple bumps in the plot, but overall a very rich, entertaining historical romance that was well constructed. The author also had a very easy way of developing sex scenes. I find I could easily recommend this book.
First let me say that I love every book I've read by Karen Robards except this one. The parts I didn't like the most was how after the hero and heroine made love, the heroine felt ashamed and dirty because she made love to a convict. She kept calling the hero convict to make sure he knew his place. They supposedly fall in love and he asks her to marry him. What do you think happens, she tells him she can't marry him because he is a convict and what would people say. She is more worried about how she would treated by her community. She knows he really didn't do what he was convicted of. She was just to much into you are a convict and I'm way better than you. I don't know I was just really disappointed in this story.
This book started out slowly and maintained a fairly boring pace through the first half. I believe this is one of Karen Robards' earlier works, and it definitely shows. The H & H were underdeveloped characters. I liked Dominic much better than Sarah, and we did at least find out his backstory (halfway through the book or so). The way the two of them treated each other throughout the whole book was abominable. It made me think of immature teenagers who have no idea how to handle interpersonal relationships. They called each other horrible names regularly, and frankly all of the sniping got on my nerves. Their treatment of each other (particularly Sarah's treatment of Dominic) is not my idea of true love. True dysfunction, maybe, but not love. I know we all have different tastes and preferences, but I don't understand how anyone has rated this book at more than two stars. Save your money unless you can get it at a bargain rate.
